Orthodontic treatment
can produce broad beautiful smiles, can create healthy jaw joints and give
confidence, which lasts a lifetime. Mouth breathing, thumb and tongue sucking
can cause underdeveloped narrow arches and unattractive smiles. Two-phased
orthodontic treatment has opened our world to beautiful broad faces and smiles.
Even if teeth are crowded, not everyone needs premolar extractions. Instead,
expansion (non-surgical) with appliances, is an option.
Phase one
involves the use of functional appliances. Early treatment, age 5 - 12, should
be initiated for:
-
Habits such as tongue thrusting and thumb sucking
- A
constricted airway due to swollen adenoids or tonsils
-
Mouth breathing or snoring problems
- A
bad bite
-
Bone problems (i.e. narrow or underdeveloped jaws)
Phase one treatment may
also apply to some adults before phase two treatment may begin.
Phase two - Age
12 and up Teeth are straightened with braces. This usually takes 11/2 to 2
years. The teeth are then whitened.
Orthodontics are not
just for children . Adults of all ages may benefit from treatment. Properly
aligned teeth and jaws are crucial at any age to help protect against
deterioration and tooth loss due to gum disease and to avoid the painful
symptoms of TMJ disorder.
